John Sheridan from Columbus, Ohio, got hooked on Jazz when he heard B.G.'s Carnegie Hall Concert records. His first pro job was at 13 in high school. John played in college and then in the U.S. Navy Band. He got his MM degree in 1977 at N. Texas State University. At that time he played with the Upper Dallas Jazz Band. He met Jim Cullum and joined his band in 1979. While with the band, he has written over 1,000 arrangements for the Jim Cullum Jazz Band and other bands. John also has done tours and recording sessions with Warren Vaché, Scott Hamilton, Jake Hanna, Bob Haggart, Yank Lawson, Ralph Sutton, Dick Hyman, Bob Barnard and many others.
An Arbors Records recording artist, John is well-known for his series of “Dream Band” recordings, which showcase his fabulous arranging skills.
A note from Nick DeCarlis: I couldn’t be more thrilled that John will be in this concert – a musician of impeccable taste, he always knows exactly what do do and when to do it. John has arguably spent more time backing up jazz cornetists than any pianist in the world including Bob Barnard, Jim Cullum, Jr., Randy Reinhart, Warren Vache, Jr. and others. In addition, he’s a walking-talking encyclopedia of jazz and popular music. John arranged the “Riverwalk Jazz” radio program devoted to Bobby Hackett’s life several years ago and knows this material as few do.
